Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between PDF and PDF/A?
- PDF/A is a restricted subset of PDF designed for long-term archiving. It requires embedded fonts, defined color spaces, XMP metadata, and prohibits encryption, JavaScript, and external references. A regular PDF may rely on external resources that could become unavailable over time.
- Which PDF/A version does this tool produce?
- This tool produces PDF/A-1b, the most widely accepted version for basic visual conformance. It adds all required XMP metadata and OutputIntent.
- Is the output fully ISO 19005 certified?
- The tool adds all required PDF/A-1b metadata and removes non-conforming elements. For documents originating from standard sources (Word, LibreOffice, virtual printers) the result passes most validators. For ISO-certified validation we recommend verifying with veraPDF at demo.verapdf.org.
- Why is PDF/A required by public administrations?
- Public administrations in Italy, the EU, and many other jurisdictions require PDF/A for official document submissions to guarantee that files remain readable and legally valid over time, independent of software versions.
- Can I convert an encrypted PDF to PDF/A?
- PDF/A does not allow encryption. If your PDF is password-protected, the tool will attempt to process it but the result may not be fully compliant. Unlock the PDF first using the PDF Unlock tool.
- Does the conversion change the visual appearance of the document?
- No. The visual content of the document is preserved. Only metadata and conformance markers are added or modified.
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. The entire conversion happens in your browser. Your document never leaves your device.
- What is veraPDF?
- veraPDF is the industry-standard open-source PDF/A validator, developed with support from the PDF Association and the European Commission. You can use it for free at demo.verapdf.org to verify your converted file.
